Did you know - March 2018

March was National Nutrition Month.  The theme this year was “Go Further with Food”.  When I first saw this, I thought it meant we should try to, you know, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” as Hippocrates cautions. Or, perhaps it meant that we should try new foods, foods that would get us closer to our health goals, like maybe eat some flax.  After all, as Gandhi said “Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health.”  Isn’t that what we are all looking for?

As it turns out, I was way off the mark!  The point of going further with food actually refers to meal planning.  I am a big advocate of this.  Ask any of my clients, I do a whole session just on meal planning. I always encourage my clients to spend some time on the weekends looking over recipes for the week, then create a shopping list and do the shopping.  This gives a great leg up in being well prepared to eat healthfully during the week without a bunch of time consuming and energy sucking stress. And the leftovers are fantastic!
