You are not nuts to eat nuts!

The type of protein you eat matters.  Research recently published in the International Journal of Epidemiology showed a 60% increase in risk of heart disease for red meat eaters and a 40% reduction of risk for nut and seed eaters.

The study looked at over 80,000 Seventh-Day Adventists for 5 years.  About half in the study group were vegetarians and half were meat eaters.

According to the study, healthy diets should contain lower amounts of meat protein and higher intakes of plant protein from nuts and seeds.  The associations between the type of protein eaten and the cardiovascular outcomes were strong.

In addition to cardiovascular health, adding nuts and seeds to salads and veggies adds healthful fat that helps our bodies to better absorb and utilize more of the powerful nutrients in vegetables.

See the featured recipe section below for some ideas on how to combine healthy whole-food fats with vegetables to enhance your nutrient intake today.  Go nuts!
