Did you know - January 2020
DID YOU KNOW…
I grew up in the Midwest on a strict diet of meat, potatoes, canned vegetables, more meat, white bread, boxed mac & cheese and more meat. Yup. I ate fried bologna for after school snacks. I had heard of, but never met any vegetarians. My conservative, well-meaning family, taught me that vegetarians were hippies and not to be taken seriously. Not eating meat? Pshaw! That was only for the poor!
Then, miraculously, in the 80’s, I ended up going to college at UT Austin. During my years spent in this liberal utopia, I followed bands that promoted vegetarianism. Think Joan Jett, The Smiths (Morrissey), Consolidated and Meat Beat Manifesto. This put me on a long and winding path towards being vegan which I have been now for 23 years. And there’s no looking back.
Let’s see who has joined me!
According to a 2018 Gallup poll, 5% of U.S. adults consider themselves to be vegetarian or vegan.
Here is the breakdown by age, ideology and region:
· Vegetarianism is less prevalent among older Americans: 2% of adults aged 55 and older say they adhere to a vegetarian diet, compared with 8% of 18- to 34-year-olds and 7% of 35- to 54-year-olds. There was no reporting on children being raised vegetarian or vegan.
· 11% of self-identified liberals identify as vegetarian, compared with 2% of conservatives and 3% of moderates.
· More folks on the east and west coasts are vegetarian/vegan than in the south or Midwest.
While most of us were raised eating animal products, it is never too late to make healthier choices. Want to learn more? Please join me for one or both of these free events:
