Did you know - Winter 2023

DID YOU KNOW…

October is not just about fall foliage and pumpkin spice.

It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Let’s look at three expert opinions on how to decrease risk for the second most common cancer among women.

1)      American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM)

  • The ACLM advocates for adopting certain lifestyle changes as a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer and other chronic diseases.

  • Their new resource, Breast Cancer Risk Reduction, outlines clinically proven methods of reducing risk.

2)      American Institute for Cancer Research (AIRC)

In an article put out this July, new breast cancer research is summarized as follows:

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight can help prevent breast cancer and help improve the chances of survival after a diagnosis.

  • Physical activity may reduce the risk of death after a diagnosis, plus reduce recurrence.

  • Eating more dietary fiber from whole grains, pulses, vegetables and fruits help improve survival after diagnosis. Soy foods such as tofu and edamame may reduce risk of death and recurrence.

3)      NutritionFacts.org

In a 7-year study, researchers found that 30,000 postmenopausal women without a history of breast cancer could greatly lower their risk of breast cancer by limiting alcohol, eating mostly plant foods, and maintaining a normal body weight.

-          The conclusion: “Consuming less meat and more fruits, vegetables, and fiber, as well as flaxseeds, soy foods, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli sprouts may reduce breast cancer risk and improve survival chances.”
