DID YOU KNOW…
March is National Nutrition Month? The theme is “Think Beyond the Table” during which we encourage everyone to go beyond their comfort zone! Here are some tips:
Eat more whole, plant-based foods: choose plant protein such as beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and even hummus, in place of animal proteins to improve your health and reduce your carbon footprint. Plant-based eating styles use fewer natural resources and are less damaging to the environment. Plus, all those health benefits! See below for a plant protein filled recipe!
Bring reusable cloth bags to the grocery store:
We all have them but sometimes we forget to bring them! Hint: keep some canvas totes in your car and others hanging on the doorknob of your front or back door. It is estimated that Americans use roughly 100 billion plastic bags each year – for only about 12 minutes each! These bags end up as litter, in landfills and in streams, rivers and oceans. The impact of all the petroleum-based plastic bags used each year in the U.S. is astounding! Check out this photo from a recent walk in the Dallas area.
Buy locally grown and in season produce: Eating locally grown fruits and vegetables helps cut back on fossil fuels used for long-distance transport. Plus, locally produced food is likely fresher and may taste better, cost less and retain more nutrients. Plus, it supports local farmers and your local community.
