DID YOU KNOW…
Walking is one of the most studied forms of exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, these are the benefits that regular, brisk walking can provide:
Maintain a healthy weight
Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
Strengthen your bones and muscles
Improve your mood
Improve your balance and coordination
According to the American Diabetes Association, “Short, intermittent bouts of post-meal walking appear to be an effective way to control postprandial hyperglycemia in older people.”
In other words, three 15-min post-meal walks were more effective in managing blood sugar levels than was one 45 minute session of continuous walking. Walking after dinner is especially beneficial.
While walking in green spaces can put the brain into a meditative state, and work as a stress reliever, there is much to be said about the ease of just stepping out your front door and taking a walk around your own neighborhood. So grab the dog, a friend or some music and enjoy the longer days while they last.
